A video of me playing the addictive shoot' em up "Phoenix" (which was named after the city) for the very first time in more than 12 years. Was it really this difficult when I was a kid, or is it just me getting old? ;)

  • Awesome!! This reminds me of "Demon Attack". I have DA on a still working Atari 2600. Another really cool arcade game is "Spider Fighter". The ultimate goal in Spider Fighter is to get to the Banana level so you can get rapid fire. :o)

  • Fun factoid: According to Wikipedia, Atari apparently sued the developers of Demon Attack (1982) because DA was too similar to Phoenix (1980).

One a side note, I wish I had kept my slick and slim Atari 2600 Jr. It made most modern game consoles look, sound and feel like over-sized industrial fans by comparison...

  • Humbling, indeed! With the exception of the real die hard shoot 'em up fans (who simply moved on from "Space Invaders" to games like "Ikaruga" without leaving the genre), it is clear that most of us have simply lost that Zen-like focus which is required to master these titles. Of course, there's also the difference between playing these games on a TV and playing them in a tiny window on a PC screen, as I did here... ;)

  • i own that game on a real atari 2600!

    and my hi-score is 15380

  • hi, on that space ship, try this. shoot a tunnel through the first layer then get off to the side out of their weapons range. shoot out the moving upper layer, then back to the center to take it out.

  • Great game. Also, It is possible that, due to the Windows XP border, this video could one day be double-nostalgic. Though franky the idea of people having nostalgia for Windows XP is quite disturbing.

  • @Neo2906 same here dude

    i'll never forget that music

  • I used to think the boss was driving a giant watermelon

  • @Demiath Well, I still have my 'breadbox' Commodore 64 and wouldn't change it for the world!

  • oh my gosh. i loved this game. i played it the whole day and night. thx for this video.it reminds me of my childhood. :-)

  • Used to know a glitch with this, switching something on and off real fast at the back of the machine. Think it gave you unlimited lives or something.

  • I played this for hours back in the 80s.

  • that music would make any parents want to beat a child lol
