It is my intention to try and film more wild fish and related watercourse wildlife in my local region - although without underwater equipment (unlike ScottyTooHottie!), I will just have to rely on clear, calm water and close access! Not so easy in the nitrate-filled, slow waterways of the Fens!

The Brown Trout and Bullhead are specialities of the River Shep where this was filmed - a chalk spring-fed stream in Fowlmere RSPB Nature Reserve that feeds the Rhee branch of the River Cam south of Cambridge, my home city.

In recent years, the main watercourse has been deliberately narrowed to increase water flow, oxygenation and prevent siltation. The presence of these fish (and regular reports of otters) prove the scheme seems to be helping. Perhaps the only annoying thing is the new gravel path right next to the stream - they can easily hear you coming!

  • I think this is a brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) because its paddles has white border. And the bullhead has 2 paddles on back, and its caudal paddle is round.

  • @olvasoszem - I'm afraid I don't hink it can be. The Brook Trout is an American fish by the looks of things. This is the UK. I think I'll stick with Bullhead and Brown Trout as the title for the time being... but thanks! Please note... the Bullhead is brief (between 2:13 and 2:45)... The film starts and ends with Brown Trout.

  • This is not a bullhead.

  • @olvasoszem - thanks for your comment. What could it be then? I agree that it doesn't fit the ID bill particularly well... but there are not many other candidates!

  • @zeeox - watch?v=VcRd4_D2bVw&feature=related - This is the bullhead. Two back paddles, round casual paddle, no white border, no swim-bladder.

  • @zeeox - I saw the film from start to end. You're right, brook trout is originally an american fish, but it's deployed into whole Europe from 1884, ESPECIALLY the British Islands (and here in North Hungary). Believe me: the fish that you've subtitled is not a bullhead. The bullhead (Cottus gobio) is completely different. I had one of this fish in aquarium and I catched a lot of them.
