Antonio Vivaldi. Stabat Mater.

Philippe Jaroussky, Jean-Christophe Spinosi and Ensemble Matheus.

Festival du Haut Jura
9 June 2007

"In February 1711, Vivaldi and his father went to Brescia, where his setting of the Stabat Mater (RV 621) was played as part of a religious festival. The work seems to have been written in haste: the string parts are simple, the music of the first three movements is repeated in the next three, and not all the text is set. "

English translations

At the Cross her station keeping,
stood the mournful Mother weeping,
close to Jesus to the last.

Through her heart, His sorrow sharing,
all His bitter anguish bearing,
now at length the sword has passed.

O how sad and sore distressed
was that Mother, highly blest,
of the sole-begotten One.

Christ above in torment hangs,
she beneath beholds the pangs
of her dying glorious Son.

Is there one who would not weep,
whelmed in miseries so deep,
Christ's dear Mother to behold?...

Many thanks to LydianAirs, grenouilleGG and Jana for record of Stabat Mater.

  • I think the 1st mage doesn`t match with the first music (i´m sorry i`m from madrid). I love (realy) your video, but... maybe we could thinkwe are downloading Crhist! form his cross....// And now in spanish: Ahí vá mi corazón!

  • Thank you for your comment and remark. Perhaps you are right. I'm not a catholic, I'm a jew and I think I don't feel some nuances of tis Holy text. I just wanted to show Sorrowing Mother in her way, because it seems to me this music speak of inner sorrow of woman, sorrow of mother. I think it's very "Human" music, not just a Holy hymn or Historic text.

It's only my opinion, but your version is rightly more.

  • that ugly, flat voice, without emotion, I dislike.

  • @oberega Catholic music or Jewish music they're share of the Humanity. It's our common heritage since we all share same world. Catholics Jews Atheist they all born same way and die same way so what's the difference nothing.

  • Un genio!! Da emozioni fortissime! Condivido che è un genio come Pavarotti.

  • Que hermosa musica.

  • music...

  • I wished this would have been released in studio quality.

  • Loves it

  • @JackJosephh : "all music at this time was religious" is the most ignorant thing I've heard in a while. *boggles* that's not even CLOSE to accurate.

  • @oberega i think the images are suitable for the music....vivaldi was a priest....alot of his music is devotional in terms of theme...so it makes lots of sense
