Rosita Renard (1894-1949) was a virtuoso Chilean pianist in her twenties when she recorded this somewhat abbreviated ca. 1918 Duo-Art reproducing piano roll version of Franz Liszt's Rhapsodie Espagnole in c# minor. Renard trained in Germany with Liszt pupil Martin Krause, and came to the United States before World War I, where she briefly concertized before retiring from the celebrity lifestyle. She returned to Chile to teach, returning only once to the US after World War II. Many of her students became noted pianists, and she was friends with conductor Erich Kleiber and with Claudio Arrau. She made very few acoustic recordings before her death—the main exception being her first and only Carnegie Hall concert on Jan 19, 1949, given at the request of her students, and immediately proclaimed a triumph. She was noted for her fast tempos and wild abandon in performances, seemingly at odds with her quiet and private temperament. This piano roll #6208-4 provides a rare and interesting glimpse of her early prowess. The piano is a newly-restored 6'2" Steinway Model XR, that happens to be for sale at www.historicpianos.com.
