Mothers / Daughters
Vita and Anya Buivid
2008-2010

There are certain moments in the relationships of mothers and daughters, the highest emotional state of tension tears. But it is not necessary the negative emotion, it can be caused by tenderness, compassion, joy.
In similarity to gala portrait of the Art Deco period, inspired by works of Tamara de Lempicka, the project Mothers / Daughters appeals visually to neo-classical female images, created by Lempicka in 1920 th 1930th. Lempicka was a cult figure on both sides of the Atlantic, and her first exhibition in New York in 1933 became a real sensation in American circles of realistic art of the time. The artist was particularly interested in the subject of motherhood; she painted group portraits of women, and her daughter Kizett was often seen in her paintings.
Association with de Lempicka is no coincidence the project Mothers / Daughters was created by Vita Buivid in collaboration with her daughter Anya, who is working currently on her PhD on the topic of Art Deco painting. Thus the tears on the face of a woman are ostentatiously transposed from a well-known photograph of another famous Art Deco figure Man Rey.
Mothers / Daughters is performed in a technique of dynamic photography, a new form of multimedia art, introduced by Vita Buivid in her series Fellowtravelers (2007-2008). In the Mothers / Daughters the monitor becomes a space for a new picture. The specificity of dynamic photography based on the border-line between a photography and video-art: the photograph exhibited on the monitor is almost unchangeable, although an element of movement, development and dynamics is achieved by minor movements by using animation methods a technique Vita used in 1980th. Considering development of technique long photo, where static video refers to tradition of photography, popularized by English artist Sam Taylor-Wood, it may seem that dynamic photography is not such an original approach. However the difference between long photo and dynamic photography has the main point: long photo - is primarily a video, using photography methods, while dynamic photography - it is always a photograph that breaks the boundaries of static image.
