This was the question and answer session after the screening of a documentary called Diagnosing Difference. It gives multiple first accounts on being diagnosed with G.I.D. Gender Identity Disorder. What we call a choice to be who we are is considered a mental illness by others. http://www.frameline.org/now-showing/at-the-center/august.aspx
I haven't yet seen the film but I agree... the trans community is a bit of a dumping group for identities, many of whom don't really connect. I totally understand the need to show diversity, but I also think projects like this tend to be shot through a "queer lens" which minimize the importance of medical treatment for many. Rather than say "well all transsexuals don't want surgery" I would prefer hearing... this is a specific group of people who DO need it... and this is what they're called.

I think that Second last speaker got it right! they are representing diversity but yet what is each individual looking for? G.I.D. exists for a reason!
