  • There are valid comments about councillors allowing the demolishing of old buildings & the slow revival of parts of the town but I travel a lot & I see much worse places than Trowbridge. It is the county town of Wiltshire & the birthplace of Isaac Pitman, who invented shorthand script used in legal & medical practices, the typewriter & the qwerty keyboard. I challenge you to read the history of the town & still say you think it's dying.

wow did you read that on the wall in wetherspoons?

History, bog all to do with it. Were talking about job creation in the town, about offer young people something, anything, to get off the dole and into work.

  • I'm old enough to remember what it was like in the 50/60's , we had 3 cinema's, a great open air swimming pool [ it only needed a roof ] , a football club , the Top Twenty club in the Town Hall [ the only place to be on a friday night ] , the Bernie inn for meals, the Penguin fish & chip shop and real shops in the town centre.

Now its just one big housing estate !.

  • DAMN! There are almost no jobs or real attractions a couple of struggling businesses and fucking idiots off there head on coke speed and booze at the weekends, and smoking weed all through the week robbing each other for drugs spare change and phones stomping on each others heads. What really is that great about Trowbridge? if you want a historic town bradford on avon is 4 miles away tops if you want a city -Bath. 70% of people in Trowbridge will stay there doing what they do now forever.

  • @andyfarquar. it has and still is dying. u say read about its history, you've totally shot your own argument in the foot. Trowbridge had a massive industry "HAD". From spitfire's to cotton mills, some of the first cinemas in the country, brewery's even the pie factory helped town moral. i personally am not from trow (hartlepool), i would never move away from here but you can not deny the fact that this town is dying a terrible death. how many small business open and close within 6 months - most

  • Look anyone can take a load of close up images of depression and closure in any town or city. What has fucked up Trowbridge as much as recession are the developers - same with any town. Hell yeah it still has the Cricket club but I remember the cricket ground on Bradley Road tool - Now it's a B&Q. Trowbridge rail station is tragic and the closure of the Lido/outside swimming pool didn't help. As a county town it needs to stand up to public amenity growth. Hey it got it's skatepark after 20 yrs!

  • I live in Trowbridge; have done for the last 3 years. Not my favourite place in the world (I'm from Bristol and miss the life there!). Trouble with Trowbridge is it is full of crappy cheap shops. We have no decent shops - M&S, John Lewis, Debenhams etc etc. We have to go to Bath for quality shops. Instead we have all the cheap shops, and the Shires looks like it's full of inbreds - most of the shoppers have no teeth! lol

  • Although i love being from trowbridge they should have left it so it was more liek Southwick or Beckington, much better places tbh. And liek atleast in Bath when they build new things they try and make it fit with everything else

  • @mentonish

Good compilation. I also went to School in Trowbridge (80s) - I remember the smell of Bowyers, and The Ushers Brewery. The Brewery was split over several sites, and they would sent the barrels on a conveyor belt that went over the road - like something out of trumpton! All gone new - houses. Its the same everywhere. Factories dont seem to survive in town/city centers.
