Joseph Mallord William Turner (23 April 1775 -- 19 December 1851) was an English Romantic landscape painter, watercolourist and printmaker, whose style can be said to have laid the foundation for Impressionism. Although Turner was considered a controversial figure in his day, he is now regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting.

william turner was my dads great great great grandfathers (Joseph Gillott) friend, he purchased a lot of his paintings..they were stolen either just before or after Joseph Gillotts death...not sure of the collection shown above as to which ones they are but they are beautiful..

Just watched the Turner episode of Simon Schama's "Power of Art" series. Excellent series. This episode was especially powerful, you can really feel Schama's passion for his art.
