This song is better than Rhinestone Cowboy.
It's underrated.

Great post. I really enjoyed hearing this one again; it's been many years. The picture of Elvis were a great trip down memory lane. I can't say that I can ever remember seeing a picture of Elvis with a beard! Thanks again for the post.

Fantastic to of come across this post. Really good. Love Glen's music. My parents certainly played a lot of his music whilst I was growing up. Nice to see time line photos of Elvis. I was 15 when Elvis died. RIP. Loved his films and music. Elvis was a very good looking talented man.

Excellent post. This is the music that "brought" me to country music. My parents are both from Texas and I was born and partially raised in the surf-land of southern California and dreaded moving back to the great plains of Texas. This song reminds me of my rural roots even if it's through my Mom and Pop. Good tribute. I may have been a surfer boy but this song reminds me of just how mucyh I really never did leave my country roots.

You were a surfer boy... What a coincidence - Glen played guitar with the Beach Boys.

How do you know Glen dedicated his version to Elvis? I'm a great fan of both and am just curious to know more. Thanks. Btw Glen did a great concert here in Dublin Ireland last Tuesday at a venue called Vicar Sreet. He's still on top form singing classics and tunes from his new album. MAGIC!!

I didn't say nor do I think anyone else said Glen dedicated this to Elvis. I said in the video info that it was a tribute to his friend, Elvis - but the montage is MY tribute to Elvis, who was friends with Glen. The lyrics parallel Elvis' life - even about living in TN. Every now & then someone comes along who can't just enjoy the music w/out splitting hairs & browbeating about who wrote it, where it was recorded & other trivia. While interesting, it doesn't overshadow what matters - the music.

When I first began doing these video montages, friends asked me to do one for Elvis. I was hesitant b/c there are so many Elvis videos on YT. I'd done some research on songwriters who were involved in Elvis' career for a radio show. This song came up b/c everyone I know thought of how it seems to tell Elvis' life story. I thought I'd start with his earliest photos & work my way through the different periods of his life. I can't think of any Elvis songs that tell his story better.

The song actually peaked #11 on Jan 11, 1976.
It should have reached the top 10 but what can you say....It ranked #100 for the Top 100 of '76
