The Commonwealth Perspective 2011 5'05" Edition of 4
Exhibited 2011 Clayton Utz Contemporary Art Prize 2012 Greatest Hits, Institute of Modern Art 2012 Ryan Renshaw Gallery, Brisbane
The Commonwealth Perspective presents an uninterrupted view of the ocean captured on video on a day in which waves, as a result of surface breeze, can be seen to traverse the image in unpredictable ways. The work was filmed on the East Coast of Australia near Forster, New South Wales, and is embellished by a synthesized, evolving foghorn soundtrack. The Commonwealth Perspective develops Bennie's continued interest in creating elegant reconsiderations of banal forms to provoke, through the use of audio, a loose emotional reference to the insipid motivations of Empire in the face of the unknown.
