Hi again.

This is one of the pieces that blew my mind away when I saw Stuart Hamm performing it in his "Slap, Pop and Tap for the Bass" instructional video back in 1991. He's the bassist I admire the most and I'd do anything to meet him, shake his hand and tell him: "You are my hero".

Stu created this cool arrangement of Vince Guaraldi's tune and mine is a pale version, but anyway I hope you find it useful. Some changes from my own: I play it in A flat Major, which is the original key (Stu plays it in G Major). I must say that I only heard the Guaraldi version when I was a little kid and didn't remember it when I started learning Stu's version. When I got to hear the original again, I was extremely confused because the overall rhythm feels so different than on Stu's version, and I decided to (try to) stick to the original. Besides, I added a bit of syncopation to the last section -"Brazil"- since it enhances its Latin character (All of the above with the due respect, of course).

As usual, lots of mistakes, far from perfect, but another effort to help bassists who want to play this cool piece (I'm working on another video with another great tune from Stu, BTW). Hope you enjoy it!

  • I've seen several videos of people playing like this - just using the left hand to tap notes on the upper part of the neck like a Chapman Stick - my question is, though, how the hell do you DO it? I've been playing bass for many years, and I'd really like to learn this. Do you just hit the notes with your right hand like you're doing a hammer-on, only doing it really hard? Also, is that some sort of bass capo on your neck?

  • @nickca420: Thank you so much for your comment! That's not a capo but just a hair scrunchie to prevent strings to produce unwanted overtones. If you want to learn more about the basics of tapping on bass (including the reason behind the scrunchie), I'd suggest you to check the first videos I ever posted to YouTube: A six-part tapping mini-course (you can find them by visiting my channel and browsing through the videos I've posted (look for the oldest ones).

    (Continued...)

  • @nickca420: They are six short videos that won't take you so much time to watch.

Thank you again! Please let me know if you need further assistance. :=)

  • Dear Alvabass: This is one of the finest versions I have heard or seen. Your execution and articulation are superb. And, although Stu is totally fantastic, yours is perhaps musically more melodic. Beautiful job.

  • Thank you so much for your kind words!

    (And thanks everybody!)

  • i love your bass, it's a Musicman Bongo, right? is it always that buzzy on the low notes? because i haven't been able to come across one in person

  • It depends on the way you setup your instrument. The higher the action (the distance between the strings and the fingerboard), the lesser the buzz. The action on my basses isn't super low, but not high anyway. Thank you for your comment!
