I saw something like this in a clip, and i was very impressed that it can actually work. I had to do an animation. Later I found out that the name of the artist was Haruki Nakamura, and he builds something like this out of paper!!! Although it looked like carved out of wood...
It was more complex than I thought to build it in 3d. I am not completely satisfied with it. More of the gears would be able to interlink, but it is a lot of fiddling around. Maybe I will do an updated version later...

  • Is your model fully functionnal? Would it be possible to 3D Print it? Because I saw a 3D printed version of this on shapeways, but the one who made it sells it 135$...

  • I feel its relevant to post this /thing:12208

    thingiverse site

  • Did you upload this to Shapeways? If so I bought a Nylon print of it. It's a neat toy. I painted it with red acrylic on the outside, and gold on the inside. I do wish you'd re-submit it with a hole in the bottom gear and a shaft to the core, so I could drive it with a music box.

  • Who made this is genius

  • Mindboggling. Wow!

  • Interesting

  • I might have contemplated something like this and then rejected it out of hand, as being far too complex.

(And I am both a mathematician, and a programmer!)

I dips me hat to thee! ;)

It has inspired me to get off my lazy backside and stretch my brain-cells and attempt an inferior version.

  • Great construction
