@caprimentle The rotary engine is researched and developed ONLY by mazda in the last few decades. And thats why it has some reliability problems (only if it is not serviced properly or if it is abused by idiot users). Rotaries have been used in drift cars, touge racers, helicopters, airplanes, motorbikes and even the futuristic skycar. google these info man...ignorance is a crime nowadays...as for the fuel consumption...more hp=less mpg and thats a universal rule!

Fuel economy does not equal power output. The RX-8 was rated at 247 horsepower from 1.3 liters of displacement. That's about 190 horsepower per liter. Using that same hp/displacement figure, your 2.8 V6 would need to have over 532 horsepower to have a higher output than that rotary.
And Mazda did compete with the Rotary to great success. Google the Lola T616 and 787B for some history on their racing program.
