Ten more people have come forward claiming injections received at a Piedmont clinic made them sick.
Guilford County Health Director Merle Green said the state health department, the FDA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the North Carolina Board of Medicine and District Attorney's office are all investigating AltMed of the Triad. The health department has ordered the clinic to stop any invasive procedures.
Green said the injections covered more than one procedure.
"One had human growth hormone, one had a procedure that's called lipo-dissolve," said Green.
On December 22, three patients came to the AltMed clinic on Pasteur Drive in Greensboro. Each received injections of silskin, used to augment a client's buttocks. Each client came from different parts of the country, and within a short period of time, all suffered kidney failure.
Silskin is not FDA approved for augmentation, according to Green. He also claims none of the injections were administered or supervised by a licensed physician.
"We have asked them for patient information, patient records," said Green. "We asked for lot numbers on the supplies that they use, we have asked for distributors."
So far, she said the health department has received little cooperation from AltMed.
AltMed's operator, Laura Cheek, said her attorney will address the issues in a news release sometime this week.
