Hello on this Friday, the 4 day of April 2008. I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI news update.

Eighty-one percent of Americans believe the country is headed in the wrong direction. That's according to a new poll. The statistic is the highest such number since the early 1990s. The survey comes as housing turmoil has rocked Wall Street amid an economic downturn.

Presidential candidates John McCain, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama will pay their respects today to the late Martin Luther King Jr. Today marks the 40 anniversary of King's assassination. Clinton and McCain are scheduled to attend events in Tennessee where King was killed. Obama will talk about the civil rights leader in a speech in Indiana.

Airline safety inspectors are confessing that the Federal Aviation Administration is too cozy with the airlines. Yesterday, inspectors testified before a House panel, saying the FAA promotes excessive leniency and views the airlines as its customers instead of companies to be regulated. The hearing came soon after it was discovered that Southwest Airlines was able to fly planes that had serious maintenance issues.

Those in Little Rock, Arkansas are cleaning up following a tornado that ripped through the area last night. At least four people were injured, but so far, there have been no reports of any deaths. The storm hit a mobile home park, damaged businesses and downed trees and power lines.

Thanks for watching this webcast, and for all of us at UPI, have a nice weekend.

  • prplmnky im with you. take a look at our DEBT we went into deficite 8 trillion $! the only one who wants to do anything worth a damn is getting fased outa the media spotlight. this is SHIT, i watched my country sink into the ground.mcain is bushs mad brother, hilary is a liing crocked con artist, had a good teacher, and borak who he? dems are pretty much steppin on their own feet. we re loosing america, our freedoms, and in a way not demanding them back we are asking for their removals speak up!

  • Ron Paul is still in the presidential race, and his supporters are still active. I have no interest in voting for those patriot act-voting, war-funding, so-called mainstream presidential candidates.

  • im not rascist, or anything, but we kind of need someone we can depend on. not someone who would drive into another depression so i guess its what ever.

  • This is total bullshit. i hope mc.cain wins. because the democrats are being stupid right now. hilary betrayed obama in votes of a state's elctorial votes, and obama had that one embarassing time with his pasture on the media talking STUPID LANGUANGE about something and basically calling the media rascist. hilary is only on the ballot because of her elctorial votes she got scamming obama. I don't really give a damn who wins but it better be someone to help lower taxes for america's sake!!

  • huh?
