Instructor: Kavita Khory
Guest Presenter: Kirk Kraeutler

This course will focus principally on the major security concerns of Pakistan, India and Afghanistan, with particular emphasis on perspectives from within the region and will also explore the United States' role in the region and the challenges and opportunities that South Asia presents for the next administration. We will examine four topics: (1) the impact of 9/11 on South Asian states, specifically Pakistan, and the war in Afghanistan; (2) Pakistan-India relations, especially the enduring dispute over Kashmir; (3) India's relations with the U.S.; and (4) resource and energy politics, such as conflicts over water allocation and distribution in South Asia, the construction of a gas pipeline linking India, Iran and Pakistan, and India and China's global competition for energy resources.
