Idiots. I finally realized what rods are. The arrow-looking thing you're seeing is the delay between a small but fast insect flapping its wings and that light being recorded by a camera. Logically speaking, it makes more sense that this is a simple phenomenon as opposed to something more complicated/amazing. They are not some unseen species. There are moths that can fly incredibly fast, and though if you looked at one you could possibly see it, doesn't mean it shows up well on a camera.
