A cool little animation I made for a presentation on engineering ceramics. Enjoy. Oh yeah, it's silicon carbide, one of the hardest industrial materials known to man. The yellow atoms represent Carbon and the blue ones represent Silicon. NOW enjoy.

  • Since there is an infinity of various polytypes of SiC, which polytype is this exactly? Without that information this video is not very informative...

  • @larssl Thanks for the comment! This is meant to be a SINGLE representative unit cell of silicon carbide, not an exhaustive description of every possible physical variation of the compound. I was concerned with describing the general crystal structure (face-centered cubic) with this video.

  • 3C-SiC?

  • Thanks man handy little animation!

  • Why silicon carbide? Do you work in the SiC CVD industry?

  • Hey thanks, I used 3D Studio Max, V4. This was made a few years ago, I'd forgotten that I had it on YouTube, haha.
