I think this song can only ever be sung by an old soak that actually has lived a troubled life. Otherwises it's only words - there could never be true emotion or meaning behind the words. That's why so many of our most classic songs are sung by troubled people......

for me Collin Raye's version is good

I just discovered this song on a double C.D of Marianne's earlier recordings. Went to a concert recently, and I took a long-stem rose. I veteran fan said: "you won't get that past the third row." Well, I did. I kissed her hand, and she held the rose the entire concert. Later, I noticed how a dozen fans brandishing old albums to be signed mid-song, were brushed off. That's the key: give....and you will receive memories forever. And don't film with mobiles; she hates it.

@EMRAHsays I don't know if you'd consider it similar, but the other great version is by Waylon Jennings. A lot of people did it, but Marianne and Waylon did the best versions, though I'm not sure it's even possible to do a bad version of this song.

Just so lovely. Heard her singing this when I was a child on a TV programme and never forgot it. Such a beautiful song.
fannycraddock99 < And yet she still gave a stunning performance.

I adore Marianne. By her own admition she was off her face when this was recorded. Hence why she kept one hand on the table. 5*
