just one of those Cicada insects that take 18 years to hatch. I caught this one flapping it's wings on a cool summer day in oswego ill.

A cicada (pronounced /sɪˈkeɪdə/) is an insect of the order Hemiptera, suborder Auchenorrhyncha, in the superfamily Cicadoidea, with large eyes wide apart on the head and usually transparent, well-veined wings. There are about 2,500 species of cicada around the world, and many remain unclassified. Cicadas live in temperate to tropical climates where they are among the most widely recognized of all insects, mainly due to their large size and remarkable acoustic talents. Cicadas are sometimes colloquially called "locusts",[1] although they are unrelated to true locusts, which are a kind of grasshopper. They are also known as "jar flies". Cicadas are related to leafhoppers and spittlebugs. In parts of the southern Appalachian Mountains in the United States they are known as "dry flies" because of the dry shell they leave behind.

  • DuelChick3 it's only anoying every 19 years...I believe that is how long it takes for one to hatch. But it's part of summer. Once in a while is cool to hear but not all night long.

  • My girlfreind and I were camping in a remote cabin near death valley. actually the cabin charles manson was arrested in. barker ranch. at about 2am we were woke by this high pitched sound. freaked us both out. it sounded to me at the time like keys being rattled. when i turned my flashlight on the noise stopped. this happened 2 more times. i had my pistol out. finally caught site of the culprets...a cicada wounded and being attacked by a mouse. when the light came on the mouse would flee.....

  • This is a sound that really makes me happy. It also reminds me of my time in Kalimatan (Borneo, Indonesia) where there is a lot of buzzing around.

  • freaky!
