The Christmas Truce of 1914

There are hundreds of Christmas songs. Some come and go with the years; others last and endure the test of time. But there is one Christmas song unsung in beauty and haunting in message that goes unnoticed. There was not one YouTube video of it, and so I decided to make one.

Written and recorded by Collin Raye several years ago, the song is about the Christmas Truce of 1914. I do not own this song; it is the creation of Collin Raye.

It inspired me to create a painting of the event a few years ago. So important is this song and the Truce that I have created a video using my painting. It is the only picture on the video.

Below are the lyrics.

Get on iTunes or buy the CD The Gift. You will not be disappointed.

It Could Happen Again
-Collin Raye

One frozen night in 1914, at the height of World War I, the unthinkable happened.

All along the entire western front, the British and Germans soldiers laid down their weapons in an unofficial ceasefire to celebrate Christmas Eve together.

They exchanged gifts, and saw each other as brothers, and that peace last for two more days when they were ordered back to battle.

In those few days, though, men remembered the reason for Christmas amongst the devastation.

And its a story that should never be forgotten.

Through the smoke filled night silence rose from both sides
Across the bloody battlefield
It was a cold Christmas Eve in 1914
To those who were there, it seemed unreal
As time was still, the spirit moved the soldiers
To lay down their arms and raise their voice in song
And pretend for a while the war was over

If it could happened then, it could happen again
A world torn apart could join hands and hearts
To celebrate His birth and peace on this earth
If for one magic night we could find again a reason not to fight
Maybe theres a chance; this time it might last.

As opposing sides approached through broken words they spoke
It wasnt long before they felt at ease
They shared their cigarettes; what they had they used as gifts
They didnt feel like enemies
With candles lit, they stood shoulder to shoulder
And on that field they found true common ground
And as they prayed they dreamed the war was over

If it could happened then, it could happen again
A world torn apart could join hands and hearts
To celebrate His birth and peace on this earth
If for one magic night we could find again a reason not to fight
Maybe theres a chance; this time it might last.

If it could happen then, it could happen again.

  • Sounds a lot like Johnny Cash talking at the beginning. Is it??

  • This is a song I have listened to every Christmas since I was a child. And yet, every time I hear it I am still amazed. This is a beautiful song and probably one of my most favorite Christmas pieces. I hope the world today never completely shuts out what God is trying to do. He really is an amazing God.

  • Muslims scums wont cheers with us at Christmas...

  • this the second most wonderful christmas story

  • Why just Christmas? Lets work out a truce every day, its only the Bankers, Politicians and Arms manufacturers who want the war to continue, and now of course its those blood suckers The Oil companies. All this is MAD, mutual assured destruction for the human race.

  • @rrevamuntan I Agree but i believe that any soldier no matter what Rank is Human Because they are doing something that so many are not but politicians are not

  • it shows that soldiers are also human, politicians & generals are not

  • This was a truce between civilized peoples who shared a common religion. This would never happen with the new age barbarians of the Middle East. Wishful thinking.

  • The so-called Christmas Truce of 1914 came only five months after the outbreak of war in Europe and was one of the last examples of the outdated notion of chivalry between enemies in warfare. In 1915, the bloody conflict of World War I erupted in all its technological fury, and the concept of another Christmas Truce became unthinkable.

  • i love this song

  • To imagine that the human spirit can hold both great terror and great love is atonishing. It's just a reminder, that in times of chaos, we always, search for order.
