I just listened to Kreisler, Elman, and Hassid playing this piece. Certainly each is beautiful in its own way but Hassid'sis by far the most excitic, dramatic, and passionate. You can almost hear the mental illness ready to set in.

Josef Hassid has that rarest of musical abilities: to give each individual note its own unique personality, life, and place in the universe; related with supreme sensitivity and beauty to the other notes of the piece.

@paulostroff99 Listened to Hirschhorn, good facility, shaky at times, don't like vibrato or pressed sound. For true virtuosity, listen to Prihoda, Jan Kubelik, von Vecsey, Sarasate, etc. Rabin has better tone but too mannered and not in the league of Kreisler, but who is?

@2ndviolinist -What about Rabin and Hirchhorn.

This violin seemed to have a separate voice for every note.See how each note has it`s own kind of sadness and yearning . The notes have a fascinating hard edge too similar to Casals` cello. Hassid proved the saying--"The good die young". More a Dark chocolate version than Milk chocolate. Magnificent.

A truly beautiful rendition by an outstanding violinist!

Nice playing but the best, bar none is Kreisler's version. Someone commented that Hassid was the best violinist in 200 years. This is from Kreisler's comparison of Heifetz - "a violinist who comes along in 100 years" and Hassid - "a violinist who comes along in 200 years." (No exact) A humble comment from Kreisler who comes along once, period. Also a slam on Heifetz. Does anyone think he believes those 2 were better than Joachim, Ysaye, etc.?

Yes it is on the fast side--a passionate piece played by a young, passionate intense man. Certainly not a "meditation"--more like an ardent cry. Easy to read too much into this regarding his mental instability.
Would he have played it more serenely as an older man?

Why those question marks in the title?

Possibly, it may be the code of a Japanese character.
