4-year-old Thoroughbred mare I have been working with to start under saddle. She had a previous video called "Jewel 1st Backing" which I posted the day before this one if you would like a little more reference. This video shows her first actual ride. Her owner could not be there so we wanted to make sure we did get it on video for her.

Jewel did wonderfully. She was a little confused about the verbal command coming fromme in the saddle, but soon settled into the idea. We did a lot of walking and started with a little trotting and worked more in. I started out very lightly sitting as her trot is smooth and that made things one step easier before I started moving in the saddle to posting.

If you are curious as to anything going on, please feel free to ask questions.

  • Nice job. You have such a great seat and hands that you are making it very easy for her. Did you long line her at all or just lunge her? She's a very nice mover and such a nice attitude. You are to be commended for starting her right and quietly! Good job.

  • Thank you. Yes, I did a little bit of long-lining with her along with the longing.

  • Was she a racehorse?

  • No she was not off the track - no race history at all. This is her first start.

  • Looks like a great first ride! You're doing a great job with her. How long did you ride her this first time? I know the video's only about 4 minutes, but I assume the actual ride was longer?

  • Yes the ride was longer, I was on her for almost 20 minutes. That includes getting on, being lead around a little, slowing moving into the longe circle, on the circle, changing directions, all to the point I get off. Most everything was at a walk of course, all trot that was done was what is on the video. Enough time to make progress and thinking work, but not too much to over-tax and push her too far.

  • she looks like she would be a fabulous jumper. is that where shes headed?

  • "cowboying up" is just a faster way to train a horse..its not wrong

  • she has an amazing trot for a green broke horse. congratulations on successfully starting her. and it is the best feeling in the world to see somebody start a horse right, not just "cowboy up".
