This is another comparison vid of the PS1 and N64 ports of Quake II. In the first vid, I just showed the first level of each game which is the only comparible level between the two. In this comparison, I start at the second level of each game to show more of the games in action. Each game is set on medium difficulty.

I prefer the PS1 version more despite the fact that the N64 version is the one I've had the longest out of all three version (PS1, N64 and PC). It just plays and runs better IMO. That's not to say the N64 port is bad. in fact it's still a good game, and it gets points for being a completely original game from the PC and PS1 versions. It plays like an expansion pack with all new levels, and ambient music. I can understand those who enjoy the levels and atmosphere of the N64 port better. It's still a quality FPS for the N64, and is one of my favorite in it's genre for that system.

The PS1 port more closely follows the PC version, but only has half the levels. It also has more of that action feel due to the music as opposed to that ambient moody feel of the N64 version.

At the end of the vid I show a quick snippet of the PS1 version running with PS2 texture smoothing on, and the N64 running without the expansion pak. The whole rest of the vid shows each game in it's original form. The N64 version shown throughout the vid is running with the expansion pak, because most N64 gamers today probably have one in their systems, so it's the version most are likely to see, and I did nothing to alter the textures or load times of the PS1 version in this vid. These are the original games running on their original consoles. No emulation used at all.

For the controls, I turned auto level off on the N64 version, and I'm running the Right stick configuration on the PS1 version which moves you with the d-pad, and aims with the right analog stick. The PS1 version also supports the PS1 mouse, but I do not have it as do not most PS1 gamers out there.

NOTE: as with the first comparison vid, this isn't to start a system fanboy war, this is to compare the games on hand. If you like one system better than another, that's your business. Each system had it's share of great games.

  • Anyone notice that the technically superior console always gets the worst support?

    Examples: N64, Xbox, PS3

  • The Nintendo 64 version has smoother graphics. However, the pixelated PlayStation version gives me a certain feeling. So I prefer the PlayStation version.

  • @77guacamole

    reasons:

n64 = missing a cd rom :/, cd roms were the cool thing back then.

xbox = microsoft comes aboard the game industry

ps3 = limited in ram, when the x360 can swap its ram around

  • I used to play this with my mom when i was 5... Memories...

  • @zombee38 I agree, I enjoy both ports. The N64 looks flatter than the PSX graphically but the game has several features (blisfully ignored by many) that the PSX lacks. Not to mention they are basically two seperate games! Both Quake 1 and 2 on N64 are actually graphically more accurate to the original game than the PSX and Saturn games are. I do really enjoy all ports of these games though.

  • What exactly is choppy or slow on the N64? I have owned both ports since they came out and I have only noticed weapon animation on the N64 being choppy, The games speed seem identical. I have only the UK PAL versions though. Is the NTSC version slower? This can happen occassionally like the Jap version of Doom for Saturn runs perfectly unlike UK and US versions and the German PAL Quake 4 is faster than the UK Pal (which makes little sense) Just wondered thanks!

  • They are both decent ports. What kills the N64's version is that it was that Quake 2 was heavily crammed into a cart unlike the PS1. I guess that the N64 had to decompress on the fly textures and other crap and that's why it runs a bit choppy.

  • @RemyLanslots The Playstation didn't have Mipmapping, lack of which is the cause for the pixelated textures.

  • last stand in quake 2, i love this game

  • N64 it's way better than PS1, WAY better (in graphics, games, and all).

  • @77guacamole Umm, PS3 gets more support than the Wii.

  • I remember being quite amazed seeing this run on the PS1.
