REVIEW: Some thoughts on the concept of FREEDOM.
The concept of Freedom : Freedom versus Security [protection].
Introduction to the law. In this 1st chapter we introduce a section which deal with the law as it affects us. We look at where law comes from, who is involved in the legal system, and at the difference between the two main types of law - criminal and civil.
What are laws? In any society, everybody is subject to the law, ie must do as the law says, or face the punishments - which can be handed out to what is called 'law-breakers'. there is no one who is different.

We still live in a democratic age [though may be not for long ? depends on how long the system will stand.]. Over the last century the world has been shaped by one trend above all others—the rise of democracy. In 1900 not a single country had what we would

The democracy we have lived with in the west has always been what Aristotle called a 'mixed regime'. It had an elected government, to be sure , but also constitutional laws and rights, an independent judiciary, strong political parties, churches, businesses, private associations, and professional elites. Political democrat was an essential , indeed crucial, element of the whole - the people had ultimate power- but the system was a complex one with many parts, not all of them subject to elections. Indeed the purpose of many of these undemocratic institutions and groups was to temper public passions, educate citizens, guide democracy, and thereby secure liberty... It's all about freedom at the end !
