This weekend marks 40 years since the Woodstock music and arts festival was held in Upstate New York. It was August 15, 1969 when Richie Havens played the first notes of what would become a three-day celebration. Havens performs for VOA one of his classic hits from the festival - "Here Comes the Sun"

I had two opportunities to meet and talk with RH. The first, at a St Augustine (FL) tourist attraction; the second, after an RH concert I attended. He could not have more nicer, gentler, more giving. There are many definitions of "Soul". Richie Havens is one.

After the concert, he signed a photograph of himself for me. It reads, "To Bill. A friend forever. Richie"

I don't kid myself that I am the only person to receive this blessing; but I will cherish it forever.
