Once you're in the mixing phase of your Pro Tools project, it may be helpful to set up submixes for certain instruments.

1. In your mix window, first add a new track by going to Track--New or pressing Shift+Apple+N to open the New Tracks window. Select Aux Input from the menu and make it a Stereo track. Then click Create to add the track to the mix.

It's a good idea to rename the track right away so that you can keep your project organized.

2. Now locate the tracks that you want to send to the same effect. For example, if you have several percussion tracks you may want to send them all to the same submix so that you can control them together.

Instead of manually sending each track, you can send multiple tracks at once by holding Shift and clicking from one end of the group to the other. All the tracks in the group should be highlighted.

3. Once you've selected tracks to send out, hold Shift+Option while you click on the Output box in the I/O section of any one of the tracks. In the menu, go to bus and then select the bus you want to send the tracks to. You can choose any bus that isn't taken already.

After you select it, all of the highlighted tracks will contain the bus name under their I/O section. This means that they are all on the same output.

4. Now that you've set up the outputs on all the instrument tracks, you have to set up the receiving end on the auxiliary track.

Go to the auxiliary track that you added in Step 1. In the I/O section, click on Input and go to bus. Select the same bus that you chose for the Output in Step 3.

5. When you play your music, the auxiliary track's fader will control all of the grouped tracks. You can still adjust them individually, the the final output will be controlled by the master submixer.
