A fundamental model which should be followed in the preparation of an orchestral work it the presentation of the instruments in the musical score - that is called "score order". It is a term which stands at the underpinning of the operation of the orchestra library.

This is a description of the order of instruments in an orchestral score. this model should be followed by aspiring composers. It may also serve to answer some questions about what a conductors is looking at when he is conducting a concert.

I have also noted some exceptions as this model is not universally followed.

  • Many conductors happen to be female. Lots of references to "he."

  • touche

It's rather cumbersome to always say, he/she or she/he and I'm not used to referring to conductors as 'it' although it fits in some cases.

    thanks for your comment

  • Imagine being the conductor of the Prokofiev symphony and having to train your eye to look all over the page for a particular instrument line, which could be anywhere depending on which instruments were playing at the time!

  • You've just given me an idea. I'm going to do a video showing a score all marked up by a conductor to show how he finds all that stuff.
