Protection breeds like the German Shepherd are fascinating. One moment they can be whimpering or rolling on their backs to have their chest rubbed...and then the next moment they can be fixating on what they percieve to be a potential threat, like a person in sunglasses and a walkman, jogging towards them, ready and capable of taking out the threat.
