Alan Merrill, Shake Me, Cutting Room NYC, 2005

The fact is that Alan Merrill is the first person on earth to sing the classic rock song "I Love Rock N Roll" anywhere. The rock media oddly ignores this detail when referring to the song. He wrote it, and he recorded the first released version as lead singer of the band The Arrows in 1975, which was produced by the legendary Mickie Most.
In this clip the live performance of his composition "Shake Me!" was performed at The Cutting Room in New York City on May 10th, 2005, as a part of The Beat Goes On series. The song appeared on Merrill's solo album Cupid Deranged.
The group are a great mix of characters, with Alan Merrill on lead vocals, Peter Phipps on drums, of the Glitter Band, Dave Glover on bass of Brian Connolly's Sweet, and Jan Tilley on guitar of the Ronnie Spector band.
The band's British half (Pete and Dave) had just flown in to New York from London the previous day. Guitarists Jan Tilley and Alan Merrill both live in New York City.
The song "Shake Me!" was written for and by The Arrows in 1975, about a week before the band wrote and recorded "I love rock n roll", a song which was later covered by Joan Jett and legions of others. "Shake Me" was a part of the band's live set, but producer Mickie Most didn't record it, although he nearly did. Instead the band came up with "I love rock n roll" and Mr. Most went with that song instead.
The song "Shake Me" was eventually recorded by Rick Derringer on his "Good Dirty Fun" album in 1982.
