Each year the month of March is declared Red Cross Month. This has been a tradition since 1943 when President Roosevelt made this declaration to help the Red Cross raise funds for the War Effort. The Greater Rochester Red Cross takes this time to recognize the hard work and dedication of its 2,200 volunteers and highlight the programs and services that touch the lives of people in our community every day of the year. In a press conference held at the Greater Rochester Red Cross, Dr. Andrew Doniger, Director of Monroe County Public Health and Jean Howard, Rochester City Chief of Staff presented a joint proclamation to declare March as Red Cross Month to John Buttrill, CEO of the Greater Rochester Red Cross. Joyce Alexandrea and her son Malcolm Williams shared their story of being reunited by the Red Cross Service to Armed Forces Program (SAF), an emergency messaging service for people in the military to enable homeland leave for major life events like births, deaths, and illnesses of immediate family members.
