Vrededorp
In 1893 a petition from "burghers and brickmakers at Braamfontein" was received by the Transvaal government, requesting stands at "a nominal price" at Vrededorp. The mining commissioner of the town was given permission to grant the stands, with "squatting rights only", and the residents could pass the land only "to direct heirs or to the poor persons approved by the government".

After the Anglo Boer War (1899-1902) the British authorities did away with this restrictive clause, thus defeating the purpose of the ruling - to help the poor. The name "Vrededorp" (Afrikaans for "village of peace") appears from May 1895.
