@dewey44 2011 ? oh sorry to hear that :( RIP Ms Landesman. One of the very loveliest of melodies and a wonderfully worded song. My favourite version is the Nate Davis 60s instrumental. I like Btty Carter's too and this Patti Austin. I look forward to hearing others.

I love the way she sings this beautiful song!!!!

Class, class, class!!!!!!!!!

I really liked Ricki Lee Jones' version and would like to use it in the soundtrack of a movie, but this version is probably definitive. Reminds you of Sara Vaughn with Nelson Riddle, but even moreso. Would like to hear what Melissa Manchester or Toni Tennile could do with it, but THIS is the version I would recommend to anybody first....

The beautiful woman who wrote these lyrics, Fran Landesman, left this earth on July 23, 2012. Her talent will never be equalled.

She is wonderful, maybe one of the most underrated singers ever.

ah.. Patti, she steps into the ring with the greats, and delivers the song with sheer perfection, and her own interpretation ... I'm moved by the beautiful emotion and feeling she delivers here ... nice post, thanks!!
oooohhhhh my GOD! look at her, she lost all that weight(she was always a pretty girl) but now she's STUNNING! great song too!

@xtopherfoster Oh, yeah. She lost it years ago now. She's still keeping it off.

Ms Austin takes the pain out of the song, replaces it with yearning and contempt sadness, this does wonders for the melody and thus reducing the complexity of the song...

You know, moondance, I think that's why this is one of my all-time favorites. That "thing" she does... that feeling you can hear. Thanks.

The intensity of the melody and changes of this magisterial song are (to me) almost unbearable. And it requires a two octave range. Most singers have no business attempting this song; Ella did and put it in the canon. Austin and Monheit deserve standing ovations for keeping it alive.
