That this freedom has a price

humiliated and forced into poverty

Caso giudiziario trascinatosi dal 1920 al 1927 che ebbe come protagonisti gli immigrati italiani Nicola Sacco e Bartolomeo Vanzetti, condannati a morte il 15 aprile 1920 per l'omicidio di due uomini durante una rapina in un calzaturificio. La loro esecuzione provocò proteste in tutto il mondo. Il carattere puramente indiziario delle prove addotte contro i due italiani (che erano attivisti anarchici) attirarono sulla corte accuse di faziosità dettata da motivi razziali e politici. La richiesta di riaprire il caso venne sistematicamente rifiutata, anche quando un altro detenuto, condannato a morte, confessò di aver preso parte alla rapina. Solo nell'agosto 1977 il governatore del Massachusetts Michael Dukakis riconobbe in un documento ufficiale gli errori commessi nel processo, riabilitando completamente la memoria di Sacco e Vanzetti.
