WONG:

And yesterday Taiwanese students protested the visit of Chinese envoy Zhang Mingqing. The Taiwanese protesters were angered over the Chinese communist party's
claim that Taiwan is a rogue province. According to the BBC, at one point protesters pushed the envoy to the ground and attacked his car. Here's more.

STORY:
Taiwan riot police clashed with campus activists who protested a Chinese officials visit on Monday.

Vice chairman of China's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits, Zhang Mingqing was invited to attend an academic conference in Tainan. But his visit did not go so smoothly. About 200 demonstrators shouted at him to go back to China at the Tainan National University of Arts.

City councilor from the southern city of Tainan, Wang Ting-Yu organized the demonstration.

[Taiwanese Student Protester]:
"I think Zhang Mingqing oppresses Taiwan in many ways. He should first apologize about the tainted milk, and understand that Taiwan is not part of China, before giving a speech in Taiwan. Without understanding this, how can he communicate with Taiwanese people? We want him to know that without an apology, he cannot communicate with us."

The Chinese regime claimed sovereignty over self-ruled Taiwan since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949. It vowed to bring the island back under its rule, by force if necessary.

Although Taiwans president has improved trade and transit ties with China, many Taiwan citizens continue to distrust Beijing.

  • Greetings from a Gimo in America

Chiang Kai Shek was a butcher. Let the Taiwanese chinese and native Taiwanese live in a free Democracy.

The KMT & DPP are both corrupt. The KMT never help to build Taiwan's infrustructure and has always stood for oppression and appeasement.

China has never done shit for Taiwan even before WWII so WHY do they want a piece now?

    1 Taiwan - 1 China

    - FOREVER FREEDOM FOR TAIWAN -

  • History is always written by the victors. It's very rare that I meet anyone outside of Taiwan that knows one of the only reasons China was ever able to control the island after World War II was because Chiang Kai Shek and his Nationalists murdered thousands of educated Taiwanese people who could resist them. Just like America and any other country with a history, there is legitimate reasons for the heavy mistrust and violent resistance.

  • @gobipie Nicely said!!! I'm so sick of the Taiwanese and their arrogant politics. And what's even more pathetic is that they don't even consider themselves Chinese by blood/ethnicity. And this is coming from a guy that has some Taiwanese in him or should I say Chinese heritage from Taiwan.

  • taiwan is the home of the r.o.c. its already independent since 1945 when taiwan was returned to the r.o.c. after ww2. the u.s. is helping they have sold military hardware to the r.o.c. for years and still do. they will respond with the seventh fleet in the straits if the pla. attack. the u.s. also has legal status over taiwan since the treaty of san fransisco 1951-52. that is the trump card that keeps the r.o.c taiwan free. because the u.s. received the surrender of japans' claims of taiwan.

  • the u.s. is aware and an ally of the r.o.c. the dissolution of the ccp will be the key for true democracy and independence on the mainland and taiwan. the u.s. supports the r.o.,c. by selling them military hardware.but they dont support independence as the republic of taiwan. taiwan is already independent under the r.o.c. also by the treaty of san fransisco 1951-52 the u.s. has legal status of taiwan as a u.s. customs territory by treaty. that ironically protects taiwan from the ccp.

  • taiwan was a part of china under the manchus. they gave it to japan and the r.o.c. got it back after ww2. its and other islands the r.o.c possess is whats left of the r.o.c. it doesnt belong to the p.r.c. the r.o.c. is the gov. and taiwan is their home. it is the r.o.c. they have done much to devlop a true democratic gov. chiang kai shek was no worse than mao. who murdered millions of his own people. chiang killed who he believed to be his enemies. china would be better off if chiang won.

  • I will be in Taiwan dec 26-jan 15. does anyone know of any dpp rallies going on during that time? i'd like to get involved!

  • @Volf99 maybe someone in taiwan think so,but their government agree PRC not ROC,ok

  • @gobipie lol I'm sure the Japanese and South Koreans consider Taiwan a country.
