Iron melts at 2800° F So this Furnace is running at close to 3000° F. The WVU Metal Casting class preformed our first iron pour of the year on Wednessday, January 17, 2007. Go to http://www.myspace.com/zernage to see the artwork after the pour. The song accompanying is "This Fire" by Franz Ferdinand.

  • hehehe you dont need to tell me things about iron and steel, im also studieng about metal, im a mehatronik, so steel is under 2.14% iron is above)) and i ment about AL that on youtube its rare to see some one melting something else then AL, But iron is a bit more trickier job, what gas do you use propan? and you use that special sand or something else, into what your pouring the melt. ps you can talk in more technical languege, i think you supposed to use it ))

  • you might also enjoy my bronze pour video (the first video response on this page).

  • wut was that at the end that falls off the furnace?

  • When we are finished pouring all our molds and we no longer need to melt any more iron the bottom of the furnace is opened up so that any iron inside doesn't freeze up and ruin the furnace. Then all the red hot coke and molten iron drops out the bottom.

  • hum Now I know how to write coque in english lol, btw whats ur career's name and how many semesters are they?

  • I think you are asking what my major is. I am a sculpture student in the art department at WVU and I just finished my third year. Only one year left, then on to grad school.

  • I am building my small blast furnace for iron ore smelting and cupola furnace is in a way similar to the blast furnace

So that's why i am asking. Thank you! :D

  • Nice furnace! great! :D

Can you tell me some more technical informations:

-total high of furnace (from tap hole)?

    -furnace inside diamater?

-slag and iron tap hole diameter?

-number and diameter of tuyeres and its centerline high (from iron tap hole)?

-slag tap hole centerline high (from iron tap hole)?

    -thickness of lining?

-charcoal or coke consumption per kilogram of iron?

-Was charcoal/coke red hot at the top of furnace?

  • What is the most efficient way of reduction for black sands (mgnetite , hematite fe2o3?). Lots of bound up oxygen. I was thinking old tires , Loads of carbon , and we have billions everywhere.

is the lack of hydrogen a major factor?

  • correct me if I am wrong, but I was led to believe that realistically steels had a carbon content of less than 1%, because above a certain level it doesn't provide much additional strengthening but tends to form graphite laths, intergranular cementite and alloy carbides, as well as forming martensite and bainite at lower cooling rates. Did you mean the upper limit for steel is 2%. Thanks.

  • whats the pot made of?

  • I think the question everybody's too shy to ask is:

Do you and your girlfriend ever dress up in those seksy silver suits and get freaky?

Backyard metal casters worldwide demand an answer!

  • Actually, as a steelworker I can elaborate on this. Most iron contains about 2-4% carbon, depending on the type and application. Carbon steel is iron that contains around 2% carbon. Alloy steels have varying amounts or carbon and other alloys, such a manganese, silicon, nickel, chromium, aluminum, titanium, molybdenum, and vanadium.

  • WOW That is awesome guys well done, how can i make one cupola furnace like yours and is it same like Steve Chastain Iron Melting Cupola Furnaces for the Small Foundry?

  • Well yea "majoring" thats how americans u call it, forgot it totally. I thought u were majoring in Materials engineering or something like that, Can I find that major in WVU?
