John Amaechi Post Olympics Interview

London, September 2008

The Olympics are over and John Amaechi is back in London to give his thoughts on his time in China during the Games.

John agreed to work with Amnesty International as its official Human Rights Ambassador to the Beijing Olympics.

He went there to report on Basketball for the BBC but also to encourage people to take a closer look at the appalling human rights record of the Chinese authorities.

Amnesty will continue to campaign for positive human rights reform in China. The danger now is that violations may well increase as the media attention on Beijing slips away.

2009 will mark the 60th anniversary of the Peoples Republic, 50 years since the Tibetan uprising and 20 years since the brutal crackdown in Tiananmen Square. The Chinese authorities will likely stifle dissent so it can present an image of harmony.

The International Human Rights movement must continue to stand in solidarity with Chinese people and speak up loudly for Human Rights for China.
