Here I am bending some HEAVY (12" x 10.6 lbs ) channel iron the easy way. Rosebud torch, Harbor Freight electric winch, and a homemade 36" wide Hossfeld style bender bolted to the floor. Just heat the flange to red every 2", and repeat 100 times. Check the arc with line drawn on floor or make a wood cut out of the radius and hold to workpiece. I had to add shims into the bender as the piece became more curved to keep it from raising too sharply towards the ceiling. Tommygun gets credit for suggesting the torch cut hole to hook the winch instead of using clamps. Be very careful if trying this, there will be HUGE amounts of tension on the cable, so stay to the side in case it snaps. Also watch your toes.

  • i didn't see the channel ...looked like plate to me..

  • The piece I was heating was channel facing downward. I applied most of the heat to the sides.

That would be some serious plate if it was.

  • what was this used for

  • this was the front edge of a Juliette balcony for Spiderwood Studios. Maybe Tarantino will stand on it one day if he films there.

  • Wow, that was sooo cool watching you hold a torch!

  • The point of this lesson grasshopper is you can use a winch attached to the ceiling to bend heavy stock if you can secure it to the ground. This allows you to use a rosebud torch without heating up a worktable or hossfeld type bender.

  • @bamwa You should put on some pants before you start putting out lessons. It's obvious that you don't know enough about safety to start teaching.

  • do you calculate the neutral axe the same way as we do with normal plate ? always wondering what is the math for W, Channel and Angle

  • so i am trying to make a rim for a motorcycle, 17inch diamater, so i can attach the spokes to it and weld to it instead of the aluminum stock ones. how hard would it be to get a circle doing this?
