The following excerpt is from the final act of the opera. Orfeo has been granted admittance to the Underworld to bring is wife Euridice back to earth. There is one condition: he cannot look at her until they are back on earth. Euridice does not understand why Orfeo seems to ignore her and reproaches him, but he suffers in silence. Euridice takes this as a sign that Orfeo no longer loves her and she refuses to go on, saying death would be preferable. Unable to take it any more, Orfeo turns and looks at
Euridice and, once again, she falls dead.
