I would hardly call this video complete but you did ask me to make it for you. As of this writing the transmission is shifting fine however the light for the TCC came up and I haven't had time to look into that yet. It's funny though since it does appear to be working fine, it might be a loose connection or some other issue but like I said I haven't had the time lately. Perhaps I'll do an update video with what I find. I guess the big question would be if I would do this again and I would say that I might, but only on my car not someone else's, it's a lot of work to get one of these out without a lift or other useful equipment like a transmission jack. Anyway enjoy the insides of a Honda automatic transmission as I'm sure you won't see it often.

  • were you order the parts?

  • @TheFrhen I got them from Honda.

  • you are soooooooooo crazy... not many people can boast fixing automatic gear boxes... you need to be specialized to do so... seriously good job!

  • @wilnerlivesformaiden It would have been better had it worked out. Thanks for the comment.

  • This is the one that I stumbled upon that got me interested in your videos. Not only did you have the knowledge to actually get it to work properly, (sorry it didn't hold up) but you also had the courage to outright say 'this might not turn out properly' instead of being a great ape about it and beating your chest. Certainly earned my respect. ^^

  • @GammaCruxis Thanks very much for that, I'm not fool enough to think I'm better than my fellow humans and it's much easier to just cut through the BS and get on with learning.

  • Thanks for the inside look! I appreciate having some insight into the great mystery of Honda Odyssey transmission failure. I'm looking at a 3rd transmission inside 135k miles on my 99 Odyssey. And you know how much that costs!! Since your transmission was slipping but the gear plates didn't look very worn is it reasonable to conclude that a fluid change with some Lucas anti-slip addative may help to resolve the symptoms? I just can't imagine that the rebuilt replacement should only last 40K

  • So the transmission started slipping again? Whats all the posts about "It didn't hold up?"

  • No Planetary gear set?

  • Hi etcg - is it true that 2005 odyssey tranny is compatible with 2002 acura cl/tl ?

  • dont know if anyone else said this, but usualy the clutch packs fail because not enough hydraulic pressure is being applied because the apply piston seals in the clutch are hardened/worn. i think if u had changed the seals, it might have been ok.

  • @jtmagicman25 I was doing what a professional told me to do by the way.

  • I took apart my 97 eclipse gsx AWD trans and found a broken kickdown band and ruined front pump and when I had it apart, which is way less complicated than your honda, I proceeded to scotchbrite the steel clutch parts to remove glazing. I also checked all the surfaces of the friction materials to see if they needed to be replaced. I replaced the broken parts and put it all back together and wala, it worked and no problems so far. It's scary to try so try it first on a junk tranny.

  • We took apart a hydraulic, wet clutch transmission for a dozer in class and put it back together, and it surprisingly looks very similar to this.

  • I take it that it didn't hold up, fro reading some of the comments.

If I recall correctly, it looks liked you put the marcell ring in backwards.

  • its funny i was the other way about i wouldnt think twice about overhauling an auto trans myself but the first time i did a manual i was like etcg thinking i should have my head examined but now i have done a few i am confident on both setups.

  • my friend has an odyssey, his second gear doesnt "slip" once it locks into second its solid the issue he has is as its releasing first and going into second theres a scary period where its almost like its stuck between gears and cant get into second and the engine revs way up and then it settles into second
