A poem written for a lady whose son was killed in WW1, to help her to come to terms with what seemed an unnecessary sacrifice.

  • What a sublime poem and how wonderful recitated, thank you very much!

  • Lovely.

  • but i love this poem. no doubt about that

  • i don't really agree here. the gesture behind this poem may indicate a generous spirit, but by exploring the meaning of this poem, one can find it to be harsh and incredibly pessimistic. it gives no light, no praise to human nature. it is the resignation to everything in life, and if i were this killed soldier's mother, i would have cried at thinking that my son died with these thoughts in mind.

  • My great uncle was from Eyrecourt, a village in east Galway and died fighting at Gallipoli for the British Army in 1914 his brother died fighting for the IRA in the war of independence in 1919.

  • What a generous spirit to attempt to soothe a broken heart with a poem.
