This is an excerpt from the film Slam (1998) about a man who gets caught up in the prison system for fumbling on a drug deal. This scene captures Ray, the protagonist (played by the poetic prodigy Saul Williams) transcend the pain of his caged state through poetry. In response to the metallic beat produced by the inmate next door drumming on his cell bars, Rays freestyle portrays his resistance against the injustice of the criminal justice system in America. Creativity is the key that enables this momentary freedom from captivity. As his words splash color onto the cold inoculated space, as his lyrics converse with his neighbors beat, two strangers empower their souls.

That is some real jailhouse shit there---
But this was the best scene in the movie and really captured what it feels like to be in a freestyle cipher when cats are really using rhymes to heal themselves and not just to make money
