This was on the soundtrack for The Mod Squad (MGM 1999) released on WEA/Elektra label. NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED. Lyrics:

(Lauryn Hill):

(Watch this... a-ah)
Exhausting every chance
These victims of circumstance
Dancing the circle of confusion
With cold muses
Grab their soul with a tight grip
Then uses up
All your power
While the weak man he loses
And it's deep how
Whenever man speak now he refuses
To remember the abuses
And all the people he misuses
And there ain't no excuses
Cos in every situation man chooses
His own plate, his own fate, his own date
At redemption, and only fools and babies get exemption
Cos, in the hereafter school, see we all stay for detention
And did I mention
It's either ascention or dessention, no third dimension, so pay attention...

(Curtis Mayfield with Lauryn Hill on background vocals):

How did I get so far gone
Where do I belong
And where in the world did I ever go wrong
If I took the time to replace
What my mind erased
I still feel as if I'm here but I'm gone

Porched up in a rocking-chair
With my feet all bare
Rolling my blunt in a cigar wrap
Live an adolescent mind
Never do take the time
Waiting for my high, quiet as it's kept

How did I get so far gone
Where do I belong
And where in the world did I ever go wrong
If I took the time to replace
What my mind erased
I still feel as if I'm here but I'm gone

Mama told me I was best
Argue and punch in my chest
"Son now be strong, let me take you home"
I'd see in her eyes so sincere
Screaming, what got me here
Standing in the world and with my mind all blown

How did I get so far gone
Where do I belong
And where in the world did I ever go wrong
If I took the time to replace
What my mind erased
I still feel as if I'm here but I'm gone

How did I get so far gone
Where do I belong
And where in the world did I ever go wrong
If I took the time to replace
What my mind erased
I still feel as if I'm here but I'm gone

I do nothing but waste all my time
Leaving the world behind
Smoking my crack just to keep me high
Around the boys I play my part rough
Keep myself tough enough
Never to cry
Never to die

How did I get so far gone
Where do I belong
And where in the world did I ever go wrong
If I took the time to replace
What my mind erased
I still feel as if I'm here but I'm gone

How did I get so far gone
Where do I belong
And where in the world did I ever go wrong
If I took the time to replace
What my mind erased
I still feel as if I'm here but I'm gone.

  • NICE!!

  • @vitalsignsbeats I've just been listening to New World Order, the album this is originally on, and she's not on that or credited, so I guess (just an informed guess) that she's worked with the track. Done a damn good job on it, too. Great album, Curtis' last message of hope and beauty to this poor world.

  • Ein Teil von Liebenswürdigkeit besteht darin, die Menschen mehr zu schätzen und zu lieben als sie verdienen.

  • @cito423 she still IS fly! Check out Unplugged. She's flyer than ever. Check out "Freedom Time" or any song on "Unplugged", really. She's just taken it deeper and higher.
