El departamento recibe su nombre en homenaje al Brigadier General Juan Antonio Lavalleja, quien tuviera destacada actuación militar y política en la lucha independentista del país, y que era oriundo del mismo.
Presenta un relieve alto en el sur, con sierras, cerros y valles amplios, y llanura hacia el norte. Posee montañas y peñascos que a menudo son de granito.
Posee una red hidrográfica importante y bien distribuida que puede ser dividida en dos cuencas: la del río Santa Lucía que riega toda la región sur, y la central o del Cebollatí, encerrada parcialmente por la Cuchilla Grande, que abarca toda la zona norte y central del departamento.
Los principales atractivos turísticos de Lavalleja son la gruta y el Cerro Arequita, Villa Serrana, el Parque Salus, el Cerro del Verdún, la Represa de Aguas Blancas, el Salto del Penitente y diversas estancias turísticas como la de "La Peña Blanca".

The department receives his name in honoring to the General Juan Antonio Lavalleja Brigadier, who had out-standing military and political action in the independence fight of the country, and that was native to the same one.
He presents a high relief in the south, with saws, hills and wide valleys, and plain towards the north. It possesses mountains and crags that often are of granite.
It possesses a hydrographic important and distributed well network that can be divided in two basins: that of the river Saint Lucia that waters the whole south region, and the head office or of the Cebollatí, enclosed partially by the Big Cleaver, which includes the whole north and central zone of the department.
Lavalleja's principal tourist attractions are the cave and the Hill Arequita, Highland Villa, the Park Salus, the Hill of the Verdún, the Dam of White Waters, the Jump of the Penitent and diverse tourist stays as that of " The White Rock ".
