Another installment from This Way to Sesame Street (1969) Bert and Ernie explain to the audience that the show will include live scenes with people on the street--not just the sketches and songs. To illustrate their point, they show the first couple minutes of the first episode.

  • Carroll Spinney, who's the puppeteer for both Big Bird and Oscar. Spinney stands inside the Big Bird costume and uses one hand to operate the mouth, and uses his free hand to operate the left hand. The other hand moves by a string that's connected to the beak and other hand. That way when one hand moves, the other does as well.

as far as performance goes, Spinney can see what he's doing, by watching a 1-2 inch TV screen inside the suit. He sees what the audience sees.

    Hope this helps!

  • Gorden with hair, Mr hooper's still alive, Oscar is orange, and Big Bird is freaky looking. I'm glad I wasnt around til 1979, this would've disturbed me abit. lol
