This is a review of the zelda tenor from STL. I thought it important to review it where many people will buy this as their first ocarina, and as much info as you can on a instrument before buying it is very useful, especially when you're buying online. Also, there are other reviews of this ocarina and I don't think that this review will differ or be inconsistent with the others, it's a fairly easy ocarina to pin down.

Also, I did paint it as the original appearance to me wasn't even what a "zelda" ocarina should look like. I didn't modify the sound whatsoever, I wouldn't even begin to know how with intent.

Also for those who are perfectionist or like their lingo to be precise, I know I should be saying "pitch" instead of "note" in some spots, I do apologize.

So just to recap, not a bad ocarina for beginners, it won't discourage you to the point of wanting to break it though you'll probably move up from it at some point if you're an even remotely serious ocarinist. It's fun though!

Also, just a small point, I do find this ocarina responds to the acute bend technique but it certainly doesn't fix the issue, it merely patches it somewhat. I have had just as much luck blowing a bit harder, though a small improvement can be heard using this technique.

Enjoy.

  • I got this same ocarina for Christmas, but the higher notes do not sound airy at all. They sound fairly close to the way my Double Ocarina does, and I PROMISE that is not airy. Did you hear of any changes they made to the ocarina? (The subhole issue is still there)

  • I haven't heard of any changes made to the design. I think I mentioned this before but i think I am a harsh critic of ocarinas because I have 3 hinds and they are just superior instruments, but that one isn't atrocious, especially when you learn to feel it out.

As for the subhole issue, that can worked around with alternate fingerings, I am going to post a video for that in case people are interested.

  • I love your shirt. *laughs*

You did a great job on Zelda-ing up your ocarina! ^^

  • I love that shirt too actually, and thanks! ;)

  • well like i said in the review, it depdnds what you're intnetion is, if you're a beginner or just want to play for zelda songs, then I have no isses with this ocarina in the least bit, it's a good little instrument.

  • Saria gives you teh ocarina with a triangle

  • I notice that you move your entire arm back when lifting the thumb to play?

It may be because I've played a Flute for years, but.. I can simply move my thumb backwards or to the side to uncover the hole...

also, the ocarina's design has been fixed for the chrome and triforce.. Maybe STL did not have the rights to sell anything with the Triforce on it, as it would, logically, belong to nintendo?

  • @origamipotato lol i didnt mean it like that i thought that said two weeks lol dont i feel stupid XD

  • @movi3mak3r2000 Wow you responded to a comment from 2 years ago! haha I'm guessing the zelda-ing up thing was about you mentioning painting it? Who the heck knows what I was thinking now. ><

  • @origamipotato the ocarina was made and bought like that -___-

  • @Anthrax80m8 ~ Handmade ceramic, and hand-painted. Looks much now than it did when this video was made.

  • is it ceramic?

  • I just got one of these. It looks like STL put an actual triforce on there including a silver band around the mouth piece bit. The subhole issue you mentioned is fixed and the airy-ness issue isn't really an issue. The higher notes generally require more air in order to completely hit them.

  • On the high notes tilt your head down, and pull the ocarina into chest per say maybe 10-15 centimeters from your chest and that should make the higher notes sound better.

  • Jeez this buy sounds horrible man, too bad you wasted money on this thing.
