Scot Gormley presents an analysis of the chord changes for Donna Lee. The analysis is shown specific to a single key (Ab) and in a roman numeral (functional) format for use in transposing the tune to other keys.

  • Great stuff and great channel for aspiring jazzers. Been looking for material of use on functional analysis stuff for some time now! Besides this I've found the approach built into the latest version of the free Impro-Visor software of jazz educator Bob Kelly (analyses changes identifying Key Centers + "Lego Brick" sequences).

Please could you say some words about the IV | bVIII7 | I - movement in the B-section. I did not understand the logic there.

  • @maganz Thank you. I think you mean IV | bVII7 | I . That's DbMaj7 Gb7 and AbMaj7. The Gb7 is not diatonic to the key of Ab. bVII appears in a lot of jazz tunes.

  • The scales or modes to use in soloing and the why to use these scales or modes would lend to a deeper understanding of the harmonic structures.

    To me anyway

I would be interested what you would have to say on that subject.

    Keep up the good work
