Every Year, Hundreds of thousands of mayflies invade our town for 1-2 nights. It is very gross, but such a phenomenal event to see.
**Kittanning is situated along the Allegheny River. Each year, the bugs invade the town.
The bug population was so severe this weekend that officials had to temporarily close down the Citizens Bridge over the Allegheny River to sweep the bridge and then sand it.
A combination of heat and humidity that causes the population explosion of insects. However, after a day or two, they disappear.
"They just hatch off the river, the lights, the bridge,"
Oh my... that's awful... I don't need to see the video I was walking in it. They were up to my ankles and it took hours to get them off. Its completely nuts.
