What does the way a human looks have to do with his or her intellect??
If one judged creativity or intellect by looks some of the dumbest of Holliwood would be out great intellects. lol
Take some literature and poetry classes and live in the deep south and then you will realize that this man is a very good poet. Who cares what he looks like??

He is really good. Anyone who does not understand him or does not appreciate his poetry is not educated.
Or they are ignorant of the culture of the South or the culture of Whites and Blacks transplanted to the North.
