I decided that as I was in the area, I'd go over to the old Rivenhall base to film the Nissen huts etc, before the out of control vandals made it any worse, so enjoy this little walkaround, and just imagine the historical events which took place there in the latter stages of WW2. The site is also apparently very active in events of a paranormal nature, and it felt very eerie walking around there alone in broad daylight!

Yes, not all of the buildings are destroyed, but these were the first to go, the rest are earmarked for destruction too. I have videos on my youtube account here taken from airborne model aircraft, and you can see how much other destruction is taking place. The main runway has given way to a quarry, and an incinerating plant is going to be installed on the site, courtesy of the EU..

I'm glad you found my video rijry, thanks.

Sadly, since recording this movie, I have learned that these old buildings have recently been destroyed. I was certainly extremely lucky I made the video when I did, it's gone now, never to be seen again...(Sept 2010)

Unfortunately airfields don't seem to hold the same interest as castles and other archaeological sites to those in power and I along with many aviation enthusiasts find it abhorrent behaviour and a disgrace to all those men and yes women too, that gave their lives to keep this country free from tyranny. I know it's impossible to save every control tower, hangar and airfield building, but don't let our history just vanish from the landscape.

There is a site near the other T2 hangar called the Wayfarers. This is being used an an industrial site and it's where the old gymnasium stands, the other building are still in use. When I was in the RAF I paid a visit to the airfield, it was still being used by Marconi and sometimes a low level Tornado or Jaguar would fly over the airfield. There is a small booklet available by a chap who had an interest in the airfield, might be worth trawling the internet for it.

I worked in the gravel pit next to the airfield in the mid 1980's and while stripping off the topsoil (we were near the bomb site area) a Colt .45 pistol was found, hand grenades and lots of ammunition from ,50 cal to .303. The pistol hand grips were mostly missing and the gun was very rusted, but it was eventually cleaned up.

I'm not surprisd the place is active. I got that feeling from this side of my keyboard.

I hope the greedy people get a visitation from the odd airman.

Guys, if you think these buildings should have a preservation order on them, write to Mr Cameron telling him your thoughts..

'll try and get a letter off in the next few days whislt I'm off work.

Sometimes what you don't ask for you don't get.

Shame on them....and Mr Cameron for letting it happen.

My friend and I went there today, expecting an excellent explore - unfortunately all the buildings were pulled down but the large black hangar, which was sealed! So disappointing and such a shame.

I think these remains are 50s rather than 40s.

My uncle was stationed here during the war. Flew P-51's. This is great, just seeing where he probably walked along the same paths and went into the same buildings. Thanks

mattyboy I am a postman who sometimes delivers to businesses on that old airbase and I can assure you that many buildings are still standing.Where you took your video was the part which was demolished but as you filmed you could see in the distance another hanger which has other buildings/huts still standing around it.There is also a memorial stone dedicated to all the crews who sadly did not return.
